2024: TRUMP VS. BIDEN
| TRUMP VS. HARRIS

The 2024 presidential debate cycle unfolded during one of the most dramatic election seasons in modern American history. On June 27, 2024, President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump met for the first debate of the campaign. Hosted by CNN and broadcast live from the network’s studios in Atlanta, Georgia, the debate was moderated by CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. Millions of viewers tuned in to watch the two longtime political rivals present their visions for the country’s future.

The debate was notable for several format changes designed to prevent the interruptions that defined the 2020 debates. Microphones were muted while the opposing candidate answered questions, limiting cross talk and allowing moderators to maintain greater control of the discussion. Topics included the economy, immigration, foreign policy, abortion rights, and the future of American democracy.

Despite the more structured format, the debate quickly became a defining moment of the 2024 campaign. Many observers noted that President Biden appeared hesitant at times, raising concerns among some voters and political leaders about his ability to continue the race. Trump delivered a more aggressive performance, reiterating many of the themes that had defined his previous campaigns.

In the weeks following the debate, pressure grew within the Democratic Party for Biden to reconsider his candidacy. In a historic decision, he withdrew from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, marking one of the most dramatic shifts in a modern presidential campaign.

On September 10, 2024, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris met for their first and only debate of the campaign. Hosted by ABC News and broadcast from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the debate was moderated by ABC News anchors David Muir and Linsey Davis. The event offered voters their first opportunity to see the two candidates face each other directly on the national stage.

The debate focused on many of the same issues shaping the election, including the economy, immigration, reproductive rights, and America’s role in global conflicts. As in elections past, the debates became defining moments of the campaign, shaping media coverage and public perception in the months leading up to Election Day. They also reflected the evolving nature of presidential debates in the modern media environment, where every exchange is broadcast across television, streaming platforms, and social media in real time.
